Open acrylic on Linen panel
Jane Crisp 2024
This painting was purely intuitive, I knew the photo I needed to use as a reference was of a Finch I rescued and photographed while she was recovering, but that was all. The rest developed as the painting progressed. The Finch became a Canary and ‘canary in the coal mine’ kept repeating in my head, so I investigated further why this.
After the initial thinned raw umber sketch was painted on the panel all I could see were hills holding the canary so I went with that, like the land was holding us, nurturing, I am the land and the land is me.
I don't know why the crown appeared but again that's all I could see, so I listened and obeyed the muse. As I was painting the crown I was listening to a podcast and they started talking about how, with the overreach of Ai and the desperate attempt for the left brain (logical) energy to be all (when it can not fathom raw creativity), they said that the right brained creatives and artists are going to be the Kings and Queens of the future as we usher in the new world alongside Ai, because Ai can not be right brained no matter how hard it tries, it has no connection to the organic, the soul and Universal energy responsible for creation. Well I nearly fell off my chair! So off I went and added rubies and pearls to the crown, my birth stones.
So when we talk about the canary in the coal mine we are talking about when weakness can be strength.
The crown represents power, legitimacy, victory, triumph, honour, glory, immortality, and resurrection.
The land is mother, nurturer, giver of life that provides everything we need.
From weakness will come strength.
We are in The New Renaissance.
